Homes in Gladwyne, and what heats and cools them

Gladwyne’s estates were built from the 1890s through the 1920s, and many were later divided. The James Crosby Brown estate, for example, was split into deed-restricted lots of 3 to 17 acres. The village center, once called Merion Square, is little changed since 1880, and the Gladwyne and Mill Creek historic districts are listed both locally and on the National Register.

  • Several systems per house

Large homes commonly have two or more heating and cooling systems, which makes a regular maintenance schedule especially worthwhile.

  • Oil, propane or a heat pump

Where a street has no gas service, heating comes down to oil, propane or an electric heat pump, and each has different running costs.

  • Long refrigerant line runs

Outdoor units set well away from the house to keep them out of sight mean longer line sets, which have to be sized and installed carefully.

Estates and a village

Gladwyne feels different from the rest of the Main Line. It covers almost five square miles of rolling hills along Mill Creek, with estates built from the 1890s through the 1920s, many of them later divided into large lots. The village center, once called Merion Square, has changed very little since 1880, and both it and the Mill Creek valley are historic districts. Our trucks come out Conshohocken State Road from Bala Cynwyd, about fifteen minutes each way.

Big houses, several systems

A large Gladwyne house seldom runs on one furnace and one air conditioner. Two, three or more systems, each serving part of the house, are common, and each has its own filters, drains and wear. That makes maintenance the best money spent here. A spring and fall visit covers every system on one schedule, and it’s the easiest way to avoid a guest wing that won’t cool on the first hot weekend.

Oil, propane or a heat pump

Not every street in Gladwyne is on a gas line, and the right heating choice depends on which fuel you can actually get. Where gas is available, switching from oil is often worth pricing, including removal of the old tank. Where it isn’t, the choice is between staying with oil or propane and moving to an electric heat pump. We lay out the running costs of each so you’re comparing like with like.

Keeping equipment out of sight

On larger lots, owners often want outdoor units well away from the house, behind plantings or out of view of the road. That’s doable, but a longer line set has to be sized and installed carefully to keep the system efficient. We plan the spot and the line run together before quoting, so the unit is out of sight and still easy to service.

Getting there

From our shop, the usual route to Gladwyne runs up Levering Mill Road and Manayunk Road to Conshohocken State Road, then along Youngs Ford Road into the village. Depending on where you are in town, that’s roughly fifteen minutes, a little longer to the far side of Rolling Hill Park or out toward the Philadelphia Country Club. For a no-heat or no-cool emergency, call and we’ll give you a realistic time.

What customers say

Saki of SK Heating and Air Conditioning has been servicing my HVAC system for the past 4-5 years. He is always prompt, neat, polite, and professional and I really like the convenience of communicating by text. One thing that sets SK apart from other service companies is that he has never attempted to sell me anything I didn’t need. I can’t recommend Saki enough.

FAQs about HVAC services in Gladwyne, PA

We heat with oil. Can we switch to gas?

Only if PECO’s gas main reaches your street, which PECO can tell you. If it does, Lower Merion requires any abandoned underground tank to be removed by a DEP-certified contractor, and PECO has offered a rebate on gas conversions, with gas rebate amounts changing from October 1st, 2026. If it doesn’t, a heat pump is the electric alternative.

Our house has three systems. Can you service all of them in one visit?

Usually, yes. We maintain all makes and models, and customers with more than one system often have them all tuned up on the same visit, with one clear rundown of how each one looks.

Is there still a federal tax credit for a heat pump?

No. The federal 25C credit ended for equipment installed after December 31st, 2025. PECO still offers up to $300 back on a qualifying ENERGY STAR heat pump for electric customers (as of September 2026).

Get your heat ready before the first cold night with $54 Seasonal Maintenance.

We test your furnace or boiler, check for carbon monoxide, clean what needs cleaning and tell you honestly how it looks. No pressure to replace anything.
