Estates and a village
Gladwyne feels different from the rest of the Main Line. It covers almost five square miles of rolling hills along Mill Creek, with estates built from the 1890s through the 1920s, many of them later divided into large lots. The village center, once called Merion Square, has changed very little since 1880, and both it and the Mill Creek valley are historic districts. Our trucks come out Conshohocken State Road from Bala Cynwyd, about fifteen minutes each way.
Big houses, several systems
A large Gladwyne house seldom runs on one furnace and one air conditioner. Two, three or more systems, each serving part of the house, are common, and each has its own filters, drains and wear. That makes maintenance the best money spent here. A spring and fall visit covers every system on one schedule, and it’s the easiest way to avoid a guest wing that won’t cool on the first hot weekend.
Oil, propane or a heat pump
Not every street in Gladwyne is on a gas line, and the right heating choice depends on which fuel you can actually get. Where gas is available, switching from oil is often worth pricing, including removal of the old tank. Where it isn’t, the choice is between staying with oil or propane and moving to an electric heat pump. We lay out the running costs of each so you’re comparing like with like.
Keeping equipment out of sight
On larger lots, owners often want outdoor units well away from the house, behind plantings or out of view of the road. That’s doable, but a longer line set has to be sized and installed carefully to keep the system efficient. We plan the spot and the line run together before quoting, so the unit is out of sight and still easy to service.
Getting there
From our shop, the usual route to Gladwyne runs up Levering Mill Road and Manayunk Road to Conshohocken State Road, then along Youngs Ford Road into the village. Depending on where you are in town, that’s roughly fifteen minutes, a little longer to the far side of Rolling Hill Park or out toward the Philadelphia Country Club. For a no-heat or no-cool emergency, call and we’ll give you a realistic time.
