Homes in Fishtown, and what heats and cools them

The name Fishtown was in print by 1808, after the fishermen who settled here along the Delaware. Some of the city’s oldest small houses survive on its side streets, including a frame dwelling on Marlborough Street from about 1810 and trinities, the three-floor houses with one room on each floor that Philadelphia built through the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 19125 ZIP code, which covers Fishtown and the blocks around it, 57 percent of homes were built before 1940 and about one in five since 2010. Hidden City described the decade before 2016 as an explosion of new construction, almost entirely residential: three-story rowhouses on Frankford Avenue, homes with garage fronts on Crease Street and small condo buildings near Penn Treaty Park.

  • Gas boilers and cast-iron radiators

Typical of the pre-1940 rows. When radiators go cold, a pump, a stuck valve or an igniter is the usual cause, and each one is a repair rather than a new boiler.

  • Ducted systems with roof condensers

Homes built since 2005 are commonly built with ducted heat and air, often with the condenser on the roof or a roof deck, where full sun is hard on the coil.

Boiler and furnace repair in Fishtown

Fishtown was a working neighborhood for centuries, first for the fishermen and shipbuilders on the Delaware and later for the families of Irish, German and Polish immigrants. More than half of the homes in its ZIP code date from before 1940. Houses of that age commonly heat with a gas boiler and cast-iron radiators, or with a basement furnace that took over from coal and then oil, which is how most of Philadelphia heated until gas won out around 1970. When the heat quits on a winter night, the cause is usually one component: a pump that stopped circulating, a valve stuck shut, an igniter that won’t light or a waterlogged expansion tank. We trace it, show you the part and give you the price before any work starts.

Cooling a trinity or an old brick row

A trinity stacks one main room on each of three floors, joined by a small winding stair, and most are about 14 feet wide and under 1,000 square feet. There is rarely anywhere to hide ductwork, and carrying a full-size air handler up that stair isn’t realistic. The top floor gathers the most heat, so that is usually where cooling matters most. Fishtown’s two-story brick rows have more room to work with, and central air is the usual choice where an earlier owner already added ducts. In either kind of house, a renovation is the time to plan a chase for ducts and lines before the walls close.

AC and heat pump service for Fishtown’s new homes

Hidden City’s 2016 survey of Fishtown counted a decade of new building, nearly all of it homes, from three-story rowhouses on Frankford Avenue to garage-front houses on Crease Street. About one home in five in the 19125 ZIP code has gone up since 2010. Newer houses like these are commonly built with ducted systems, a heat pump or gas furnace inside and a condenser on the roof. Once that equipment passes ten years, more than the filter needs attention: capacitors, contactors and fan motors wear out, and a roof unit in full sun cooks its own coil. A $54 Seasonal Maintenance visit in spring catches a tired part before the first heat wave does.

Replacing a heating or cooling system in Fishtown

When a system really is at the end, the house shapes the job. A cramped basement may call for a compact wall-hung boiler. A trinity’s winding stair limits how large a new furnace or air handler can be, and a roof unit needs a safe way up for the crew and the equipment. We price the repair and the replacement side by side so you can choose, make same-day repairs when we can and install new systems the next day. Fishtown is about 9 miles from our shop, 20 to 30 minutes by the Schuylkill and Vine Street expressways depending on traffic, and no-heat calls are answered around the clock.

What customers say

Saki of SK Heating and Air Conditioning has been servicing my HVAC system for the past 4-5 years. He is always prompt, neat, polite, and professional and I really like the convenience of communicating by text. One thing that sets SK apart from other service companies is that he has never attempted to sell me anything I didn’t need. I can’t recommend Saki enough.

FAQs about HVAC services in Fishtown, Philadelphia, PA

How do you get a new boiler or air conditioner into a trinity?

Carefully, and usually in pieces. A trinity’s stair winds tightly between floors and the basement often has very low headroom, so a large furnace or air handler may not fit at all. A compact wall-hung boiler can replace an old floor-standing one. We look at the stair and the basement before we quote, so there are no surprises on install day.

Our newer Fishtown home has the condenser on the roof deck. What upkeep does it need?

A roof unit sits in full sun all summer, so its coil collects grime and runs hot. Keep deck furniture and planters a couple of feet away, make sure the condensate line drains where it should, and have it checked before the first heat wave. A $54 Seasonal Maintenance visit is the simple way to catch a weak capacitor or fan motor before it fails in July.

Who do we call about a gas smell, PGW or you?

PGW, from outside. PGW supplies gas across Philadelphia and answers its emergency line, 215-235-1212, day or night. Leave the house first and don’t use light switches or your phone indoors, and don’t try to find the leak or turn off valves. Once PGW has made the house safe, a boiler or furnace that still won’t run is our job, and we take no-heat calls around the clock.

We’re gutting an old row. When should heating and cooling be planned?

Before the walls close. A renovation is the cheapest moment to run ducts or line sets, set a chase from the basement to the roof and decide where the outdoor unit will sit, especially if a roof deck is part of the plan. Bring us in at the framing stage and the system can be sized to the house you’re building, not squeezed in afterward.

Get your heat ready before the first cold night with $54 Seasonal Maintenance.

We test your furnace or boiler, check for carbon monoxide, clean what needs cleaning and tell you honestly how it looks. No pressure to replace anything.
